INTRODUCTION
TO MICROOPTICS
(C-O-05-2001)
The combination of
micro-optical elements and MEMS/MST devices has been recognized as one
of the best technical solutions for implementing all-optical switching
for communication networks. However, there are numerous technical challenges
that must be overcome, and solving them usually requires a sound understanding
of microoptics. For instance, at micron scales, diffractive effects dominate,
which forces us to rethink the methods used to design optical microsystems.
Issues such as fiber coupling, active device coupling and diffractive
losses require consideration in designing effective optical MEMS/MST devices.
This course covers the major issues involved in designing MOEMS device
for optical network components
