MEMS/MST: A MARKET OVERVIEW AND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Microsystems are being applied to an ever-increasing number of products. MEMS/MST devices are used in airbag sensors, DNA sequencing biochips, projection imaging devices, integrated RF filters and optical switching elements. The current market for micromachines is now of the order of ten to twenty billion dollars per year, based on diverse market projections. Major markets are in biotechnology, automotive and communications. This course provides a comparative overview of the major technologies in use in the context of products and their potential markets. We emphasize the constantly changing nature of the MEMS/MST market projections, and discuss the opportunities that this continuous change creates with emphasis in products and applications of interest to the attendees.
