MICROMACHINES IN THE
OPTICAL NETWORKS
(C-M-03-2001)
MEMS/MST systems are
being suggested for use in many components in the future all-optical networks.
All-optical cross-connects and various other light switching devices have
been demonstrated by using steerable micromirrors, microbubble jets, or
deformable gratings. Simpler components, such as attenuators, tunable
gratings and lasers, and gain tilt, dispersion or power equalizers and
meters have also been demonstrated or suggested through the use of MEMS/MST
structures. This course discusses some of the major components for optical
networks so far suggested for implementation using micromachining technology
in the context of an all-optical network.
